THERESA ADAMS
|
In mid-July, 28-year-old Theresa Adams set off on a three month, 600km trek through the remote mountain kingdom of Lesotho, to promote awareness within the Australian and global community, of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. Theresa’s solo trek has taken her through some of the most rugged, isolated and physically-challenging landscapes on the planet. Lesotho boasts more mountain peaks per square kilometre than any other country in Africa, and is the only country in the world that lies entirely above 1400m. To the best of our knowledge, an expedition of this calibre has never before been attempted.
Treading the Forgotten Sky – Theresa’s expedition name, has chosen Lesotho as a model country, as it is believed to have one of the highest HIV/AIDS infection rates in the world, with an estimated 29 percent of people aged 15-49 being HIV positive. In order to reduce this statistic, it is Theresa’s mission to address the need for increased awareness of HIV/AIDS in Africa, in the hope to stimulate project development. Her trek will create a means of promoting this vision, by gaining support and public interest through its sponsors, the expedition’s website, the media, and a book release upon the expedition’s completion.
Treading the Forgotten Sky has recognised that Wilderness Wear Australia has a continued interest in reinforcing its commitment to servicing the Australian public, by contributing charitably to community developments and endeavours.
A recent communication from Theresa (October 2008):
To Wilderness Wear,
“What are you hiding beneath?” This is what I want to ask people when I meet them in the wilderness. Layers underneath are sometimes not as obvious as shell layers. They are sometimes under estimated but I know the real value of them. I am so grateful for your contribution towards my expedition. It has been invaluable and I have endless compliments for your clothing. Take care and thanks again.
